military connected assistance

Texas Tech University has practices in place to support the veteran and military affiliated community which focuses on veteran success. To address the support and resources needed specific to the veteran population, TTU leadership established a department dedicated to providing services to the military affiliated students in 2010. Military & Veterans Programs (MVP) offers support to veterans and their family members by establishing educational benefits and providing resources in addition to activities that are beneficial to their success at TTU. To further support the veteran population, the MVP team has active partnerships with colleges and departments throughout the campus community. These partnerships allow for a widespread network that is engaged and supplied with information specific to veterans’ needs and support. Furthermore, the MVP department offers Green Zone Training to faculty and staff. Green Zone Training is designed to develop a campus community of support for military affiliated population and also provides tools to enhance the overall experience of veteran and family members. To support disabled veterans, Student Disability Services (SDS) provides resources to Veterans with disabilities, as the transition from active duty to a civilian life can be challenging. SDS services makes this transition as smoothly as possible. Resources to accommodate a disability can open educational and professional opportunities. To further meet the needs of veterans, SDS has added a primary counselor for Veterans. This counselor is a disabled veteran who can answer questions and provide assistance with services.

Military Connected employees are encouraged to participate in the Mentor Tech Program, which matches a mentor with a student protegee who is also military-affiliated. This partnership enhances their experience through leadership and professional development activities. Employees who participate in mentoring programs give the students a space to create professional relationships, which leads to a feeling of familial support and increases the likelihood of persistence and retention. In addition, Texas Tech employees and community members participate in the Annual Golf Tournament for Heroes event, which raises scholarship funding for veteran students. This event provides an opportunity for veterans to give back financially to their community. To further support the aspect of community, MVP employees and other veteran-affiliated staff members developed the Stars & Stripes Military & Family Member Lounge, which serves as a study and social area for military and family members to build camaraderie. The lounge is equipped with four computers with Military CAC card readers, tables/chairs, and a big screen TV.

In 2017, MVP and the TTU University Career Center partnered to offer participating student veterans the TTU Camo to Corporate Veterans Career Series. This series, which is led by MVP staff, provides valuable skills to better prepare veterans for the workforce. Skills include resume’ and cover letter writing, etiquette dinner, mocktail party, and access to webinars and job fairs. Those who complete the series objectives will receive a suit / professional attire when funding is available.

To further the support military-affiliated employees and increase veteran success, Texas Tech has fully committed to creating an inclusive environment that increases retention and the success of our military connected employees and other service members.
