description
University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) was founded in 1947 specifically to serve the higher education needs of working adults and servicemembers. Beginning in 1949, UMGC was the first university to send faculty overseas to educate active-duty military personnel in Europe. Today, we offer online and hybrid courses, more than 140 classroom and service locations worldwide, and more than 90 degrees, certificates, and specializations backed by the reputation of a state university and the University System of Maryland.
military culture
We have a robust learning and development program, tuition remission, and mentoring/coaching framework that support military family members as part of the UMGC family. As military families PCS to new assignments, the chances are very good that UMGC has an education center or offers classes on or near the new location. We have overseas divisional headquarters in Europe and Asia, with many offices throughout those divisions. We are rooted in supporting the military and continue to do so with our global footprint through employment opportunities and transfer opportunities globally.

military connected assistance
UMGC's transfer and recruitment policies/practices allow for employees, including military-connected employees, to transfer to different geographic locations/areas into equivalent positions or position for which they qualify. Many military-connected employees whose families have been deployed or transferred to areas across the world in which UMGC is present have been able to successfully transfer or be internally recruited to those areas and maintain their employment with UMGC.
senior leadership
One hundred percent of the senior leadership in UMGC’s Office of Global Military Operations, including all associate vice presidents and above, has a military connection. The senior vice president of Global Military Operations and the vice presidents of the university’s Asia and Europe division are Army veterans. The vice president of UMGC’s Stateside Military Operations is an army spouse and the associate vice president of Stateside Military Operations is an Army veteran. UMGC’s military connection runs well beyond Global Military Operations, as the University’s VP of Operations & Planning is an Air Force Veteran
UMGC Asia has several former military affiliated members serving in a leadership role. Our Vice President and Director is a retired Army member and the Assistant Vice President, Enrollment Operation is a retired Air Force National Guard member. Out of the three Regional Directors, two of them served in the military and two out of four Assistant Directors served as well.
