military culture

Our organization has a strong diversity and inclusion strategy that encompasses military culture and structure. The senior diversity and inclusion council has military veteran representation at the top level who integrates military 101 for managers and new supervisors. Military is recognized in our overall culture scorecard for diversity and inclusion effectiveness. Also, our veteran resource groups offer focused career development training led by senior managers (veterans) within the groups, and sponsored by at least one executive senior leader in the company.

military spouse recruitment and hiring

This is our 5th consecutive year partnering with the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (Department of Defense's Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) program) helping military spouses find jobs.

We also partnered this year with the Army Civilian Personnel Advisory Center and Civilian Human Resources Agency, and Fleet/Family Support Center across all branches of the military to provide career readiness and career development programs for spouses.

Finally, we partner with VA, DOL Career Centers across the southeast, and Hiring our Heroes on military spouse hiring initiatives. The local veteran employment reps (LVERS) routinely refer spouses to us for career opportunities.

We have a hiring goal of 6% spouse external hires annually.

military caregiver policy

Our company has sponsored initiatives through Hidden Heroes. Additionally, we partner with Military Veteran Caregiver Network (MVCN) to connect caregivers to careers. Finally, we understand the value of disabled veterans in our workforce, and make every effort to open all career opportunities to caregivers.

military connected assistance

The Military Veterans in Power Employee Resource Group exists to help position Southern Company and it's operating companies Georgia Power, Southern Company Gas, Southern Nuclear, and Southern Power as "Employers of Choice" for military veterans and to enhance their career development. Another functional purpose is to integrate employee veterans into the company (internally and externally) in order to encourage job performance and career success.

Additionally, our Power of Women (POW) Employee Resource Group offers targeted career development and networking opportunities specifically for female veteran employees. A mentor is assigned individually, and a structured development plan can be implemented for focused success measures.

Finally, our PRIDE Employee Resource Group includes many veteran LGBTQ employees. Focused mentoring programs can be leveraged for career development success.

We offer tuition assistance or other financial support toward the preparation, attainment, and/or maintaining of an academic or professional certificate, degree, or another civilian credential,We offer a professional licensure or certificate in lieu of military service,We offer apprenticeships, internships, or other formalized, structured training program/s to assist with the attainment of a civilian credential Navy Nuclear System Operator (Reactor Operator and Senior Reactor Operator Certifications, recognized by the industry nuclear power operations (INPO), Electrical Power System - Prime Power, Gas Turbine Systems Operations (GE Turbine Certification), Air Traffic Controllers (FAA/FCC Certifications), and National Energy Regulatory Commission (NERC) certifications. All of our post-hire apprenticeship training programs have been VA approved for 9/11 GI Bill Funding
